Global Health Day 2026: Resilience in Global Health - from theory to practice

Symposium

Resilience is increasingly a core concept within global health, but its meaning and practical application remain subject to debate. What exactly does resilience encompass, and can it be translated into policy and practice?

The third edition of Global Health Day explores the boundaries of resilience at different levels. We explore how crises and rapid change affect individuals, communities, health systems and societies, and share insights on how to deal with multiple, overlapping challenges such as pandemics, climate change, humanitarian conflict, migration, health workforce shortages and persistent health inequalities.

The day aims to deepen understanding of the different dimensions of resilience while generating evidence-informed insights for its application in practice, policy and research within global health. The programme combines keynote lectures analysing the dynamics of resilience at the global and community level with interactive workshops for a wide audience of global health professionals.

Key themes include the preparedness and adaptability of health systems, responses to crises at the community level, and the mental, social and moral dimensions of resilience at the individual and collective levels.

Global Health Day is organised by the Netherlands’ Society for Global Health (NSGH, formerly NVTG) and its working groups, in collaboration with the Knowledge Centre Global Health (KCGH) and the Training Institute International Health (OIG). The day brings together diverse perspectives from the broad global health community.
