There are strong indications of a significant number of Marburg virus (MVD) infections in some regions of Tanzania. The reason for the above advisory is that spontaneous haemorrhages have been detected in several patients at Biharamulo District Hospital and health posts in the immediate vicinity. There is a very strong suspicion of infection with Marburg virus. However, laboratory diagnostics have not been done in all patients. As a result, the severity of a possible MVD outbreak and possible spread is still unknown. This means that there is a risk of infection for healthcare workers in the coming weeks, until the Tanzanian authorities can give a definitive answer that there are no new patients.
As NSGH, we would like to wish the AIG working in this area strength in their work and personal choices. The OIGT has been involved (for the AIOS) in consultations with the RIVM and other agencies. So if you would like someone to think with you, we can always put you in touch with a contact person in the Netherlands. Hereby the link to the letter that has gone to the AIOS concerned (possibly also working in your hospital). In addition, we draw your attention to the well-known Guideline Safety and Security during the GHR. We also advise you to contact your health insurance to be aware of the coverages in this situation, including repatriation.
